If the death was at home
If the death was expected, call the person’s GP (or 111 out of hours) so that a doctor can confirm it. If it was sudden or unexpected, call 999. If the person died in hospital, the hospital’s bereavement office will guide you.

The medical certificate
In England a medical examiner checks the cause of death, and the medical certificate is then sent to the register office. Tell the doctor, the hospital and the medical examiner straight away that the family wishes to bury quickly for religious reasons — they will try to help. If the death is reported to the coroner (for example a sudden death), tell the coroner’s office the same.

Register the death
A death in England must normally be registered within five days. The registrar gives you the certificate needed for the burial (often called the green form) and a Tell Us Once reference.

Deaths in Bedford Borough are registered by appointment at the Register Office, Borough Hall, Cauldwell Street, Bedford MK42 9AP (Monday to Friday). The Medical Examiner sends the medical certificate to the Register Office; you then fill in the council’s online pre-registration form and are emailed an invitation to book. The death must be registered within five days of the Register Office receiving the certificate. Ghusl, kafan and janazah
The committee arranges the ghusl and kafan with the family and agrees the time and place of the janazah. With the family’s agreement, the janazah can be announced on this website.

Burial
If the burial is to be abroad, tell us at the very start: it needs extra documents from the registrar or the coroner and a flight, and can take longer.

The Death Committee payment
If the person who died was a Death Committee member, or covered on a member’s membership, the committee pays towards the funeral according to its rules. The committee decides the amount and can pay before every member’s contribution has been collected. See the Death Committee rules.
